Anybody out there a boxing fan? FYI: There's going to be a hell of a match this Saturday evening. Oscar De La Hoya vs the Spaniard Champion Castleijo. Oscar will try to become one of just three prize fighters in the history of international boxing to win world titles in 5 individual weight divisons, Thomas Hearns and Ray Leonard being the other two who accomplished this remarkable feat.

This brings me to my Cochrane Trivia question: Does anyone remember the Cochrane's infamous Boxing Smokers initiated in the mid 80s by Lt. Velez? If you do, you can get 10 more bonus points by naming one undefeated Cochrane boxer during this era.

Did they have smokers back in the 60s and 70s?

Hell yes I will be watching the fight, Sal.

I remember the smokers quite well. I believe the champ that you are refering to was also a golden gloves champ from northern California by the name of Ron Parish...How did I do?

Somewhere around 1965 we spent about 45 days at sea without ever seeing land . seems like after about 40 days or so we started having lots of little smokers in various parts of the ship because everyone was getting pretty tired of every one else .
I remember one day at GQ while we were enjoying our sack lunches a deck ape got pissed at me and smacked me in the nose . All hell broke loose but it's pretty hard to fight when you are wearing those sound powered telephones

Cool....not the pugulist I had in mind, but nonetheless and judging from the clarity and certainty of you response, I'm going to award you 15 points for your efforts.

I don't want to give away the name of the boxer I was thinking of just yet, in case someone else remembers another undefeated Cochrane boxer. I was trying to remember the name of the snipe (I think Hull Techs are considered snipes) who I beat in one of those smokers. He was a golden glover out of New York, and I was a regional golden glover out of Dallas. He had kind of had a wondering eye, which didn't help his efforts in the ring, but was still a pretty tough and game kid. Win I won, many people lost some sizable change, because this kid had a rep on the Cochrane, and I was new aboard. GMG1 Pete Lockwood, won big because I assured him that with a cut of the winnings I could take the unsuspecting HT out. Anybody remember the name of this guy from New York. GMG Sal

Sal, Who got the 15 points? Me or Freeman? Hey I almost forgot about Pete Lockwood. He almost recruited me for gunner. He was a cool dude.<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>
