AH, at least even though the wife tells me I can't pack boxes worth a DAMN, this question I have right from 66 thru December 69.....NO COCHRANE NEVER TIED UP IN ANY LOCATION IN VIET NAM! We sure as hell did alot of NGFS at night in DA NANG, and we dropped the hook a HELL of alot of nights to shoot, AND what did they call it...HarAssssment and IndiaNigation Fire....got this question right guys as I kept the
Anchor position watch and ships log.....Some fun, then lift the hook and go out and get some more Ammo so them GMG's could have warm feelings in their pants...Got this part right TOO, cause I had the helm during the Unrep.....Oh and then get to the Mess decks and try to get a bit to eat and there was only a tub of 9 hour old Oat Meal
....ain't the Love Boat...........

Thanks, guys. I remember going in so close that we kicked up a bunch of sand. Is that what ya'll are talking about? That would have been in 67.

Just got out a packed box to recheck the notes from the QM logs
and Cochrane was in Da Nang harbor at night shelling in 67, 68
during the 91 day stint before Hong Kong...and my notes show us
at buoy 3B (in shallow water)4 nites during the 69 cruise. If
you remember the Sea Dragon missions off North Viet Nam, we did
12 missions as "Cherry Boys" before the first shots were fired at us from a shore battery at 1415pm. The notes show that the U.S.S.
Epperson lost her unmanned RECON Drone THING-A-ME-BOB Helo looking vehicle at the same time. Notes show Cochrane no farther south during 68 and 69 cruises than NA-Trang(sp), II Corp, and we spent a whole bunch of time on stations near the DMZ and Tiger Island. Got a note that says Desron-25 says "Cochrane ought to be called the "I"-Corp DDG as we spend all of our time there". Seems MT# 1 had a whole bunch of hydraulic failures during 68 shooting periods as ship was repositioned often to allow MT# 2 to have a bearing to the targets.
Oh, and no matter where it was, OLE Main Control still has to Blow out its tubes...........

(Fuse Quick, one round Willie "P" Fire; Fuse quick, Up 150, 3 rounds High explosive, fire for effect!!)

Does anyone remember when we needed to switch radios for NGS off the coast of Vietnam and a Marine helicopter flew over our ship ad dusk to lower the radio to us. We were so close to the beach, that we kicked up sand from the bottom. I have a slide of the helicopter hovering about Cochrane. I know it happened, but haven't found anyone to validate it. I think it was 66 or 67 that I remember it, although the early part of 67 since I got off in April 67. Actually, come to think of it, we were back in Pearl in the early part of 67, weren't we. So perhaps it was 65-66.

The one in the notes was in the Fall of 1966, and Kolstad (sp) was the
C.O. I believe. Cochrane came back to Pearl in December and went
into Drydock in early 67. In the journal notes I have kept, the QM
was a Richard May, and know it was not me as they considered me a
boot and my life was cleaning out Bridge Wings! Note says there were
"RADIOS" dropped by a Helo to the fantail for CIC for NGFS as we
could not work to the spotters frequency. It was South of the DMZ
and at the same time it says we received two sets of Night Vision
Devises...in the notes, there is a comment about why the Helo did not
fly over the oiler the PONCHA'TOOOOLA and grab our mail as we had been steaming back and forth past it for two days! The QM1 was a LePack and in your life you run across 10 of the most unforgettable people.
Well this Ole QM1 fits that Bill...........
