A great guy, I heard he died of a heart attack in Pearl after leaving the Cochrane in 85. He was an all-navy fastpitch softball pitcher as I recall, and a hell of a great guy to hit the beach with.

I remember him, Chief Jones. Back in Yokusuka Japan, We used to have PRT every other morning and he used to be out there first thing and that man can run! He was like a steam engine. For a big guy like that he was sure able to outrun alot of the younger guys. With my A.M. Hangovers I used to run behind him and draft. While I worked the barbershop I heard alot about how he left. If I remember clearly and correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that he was home with his wife, I believe we were in PI at the time doing "reftra" He was getting ready to come to work, got in the shower and had a heart attack and his wife found him after she heard the water running too long. I remember when he made chief. I believe his last year alive may have been 1986. God Bless him, he is probably still doing laps up in heaven....

I believe your correct ElSquid. I was thinking it was in Yokosuka for some reason though. Regardless... the chief was a good man. As a first class, he always used to jump in my shit, for not using safety gloves while using a floor buffer. He would all ways threaten "Green.. I'm gonna write your ass up if you dont get those gloves on." He never did...but I finally got the idea.

Chief Jones had already transferred to NAVSTA Subic Bay. Cochrane was underway and the CO at the time (CAPT MCCARTHY - I think)
made a 1MC announcement. The family also requested that EMCM EARLE EPPERSON, the CMC escort the body back to Chicago where Fred was buried. MARS21 is correct in that he has just gotten out of the shower when he suffered the heart attack. He was a stand up guy.

He was my LPO and CPO when I was on board. I can remember him coming into berthing every morning to make sure we were up for quarters. He really stuck up for us in E-Div. I was a striker and he took me under his wing. He was a good guy. I will miss him.
